Modular and Autonomous Ship Attachment Technology for Ocean Plastic Retrieval: Conceptual Design Proposal for OP-SMART

Ocean plastic pollution is one of the most disturbing ecological realities of modern times. According to UNESCO, there are about 75 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean and the Center for Biological Diversity estimates that about 40% of the surface of the ocean is made up of trash. Much of this litter is microplastics, which poses the problem of passing through almost all the filters that have been used to clean up the ocean. Microplastics have now been discovered in virtually every corner of the ocean and are slowly poisoning marine life and ultimately end up being ingested by humans.
